What Is Shadow Work?

Shadow Work is a transformative practice of seeing, feeling and understanding yourself better. It is a profound journey of self-discovery.

Shadow Work involves bringing parts of yourself that have been hidden, ignored, suppressed and stuck, into your conscious awareness so you can meet, feel, heal and integrate them.

Know thyself and the truth will set you free

We all have parts of ourselves that are hidden, suppressed or stuck. Sometimes we are aware of these parts of ourselves, and more often than not we are unconscious of them.

These hidden parts of yourself can be defining and limiting you. They can contribute to your ways of thinking, emotional triggers, beliefs, stories of self, and the way your energy system functions.

These hidden parts of yourself can influence your behaviour. Sometimes you will think, feel and act in certain ways and not be sure why.

These hidden parts of yourself can also form a barrier between you and your Higher Self, your Soul, and the love and support of Spirit.

Why do parts of myself get hidden?

Often, parts of a person get stuck and hidden by their ego as a way of coping with challenging and traumatic events. The ego can employ defence mechanisms to protect an individual from anxiety, distress, or psychic pain.

These defence mechanisms operate largely outside of conscious awareness. They can distort reality, deny or minimise the significance of a traumatic experience, or shift the focus of attention away from the distressing stimuli.

Compassion is the key

We all have these aspects of ourselves. Every human personality will hold some distortions, limiting beliefs and behaviours, often as a learnt survival and protective strategy.

This is why Shadow Work is such an important part of a good spiritual practice.

What is important is your willingness to see these parts of yourself. With Heart Centred unconditional love and compassion, and without judgement, you can meet these hidden parts of yourself, be present with them, feel them, listen to them, let them express themselves, ask them what they need, and then give this to them with love and care.

You can then clear away any energies that no longer serve you. Integrate what does serve your highest good to integrate, and then allow healing to take place within and around you.

Your greatest power is hiding in your shadow

It is very beneficial to make friends with Shadow Work and to practise it. As you move through life, opportunities to know yourself better will continue to present themselves.

The more willing and dedicated you are to knowing the truth of who and what you are, the more often these opportunities to know the truth will present themselves.

Remember, the keys to doing Shadow Work are willingness and openness to meet, feel, listen to, heal and integrate whatever there is within you, and to do this with an open heart, without judgement, and with unconditional love.

This brings more freedom, empowerment and genuine transformation. This makes it easier for you to feel and experience your Soul, and to access higher guidance. To evolve your life and thrive, in alignment with your true purpose.
